About FAB Local Flavours

FAB Local Flavours is a network of local chefs, producers, farm markets, specialty stores and groceries, and B&Bs and inns. With over 100 participants, it is one of Canada’s largest local foods groups. It is dedicated to helping consumers eat healthy, while supporting and growing the region’s economy. It’s a program that cultivates local livelihoods, stewards the natural environment, works for the health and wellbeing of the community, and creates a regional food cultural identity.

Buy local, and everyone wins.

FAB Local Flavours is as inclusive as possible. Our producers choose their method of production so our list includes conventional, non-certified organic to certified organic approaches. Our customers choose the type of food they prefer. If you have any questions about growing methods, just ask the producer or outlet manager.

Size of operations and mode of selling also vary. Some large operations include farm shops, others have self-serve farm gate stands with regular hours. Some need to be contacted in advance. Others sell their products off-farm at farmers' markets. These details are all listed in the 2014 FAB Guide and on the Local Flavours Map.

Did you know? It’s been estimated* that if 10,000 households each year spent as little as $10 of their weekly food budget on local instead of imported produce, it will generate an additional $5 million in the economy, stimulate 100 new jobs, and be equivalent to taking 100 cars off the road in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. And that’s just 10% of the households of the region served by FAB Local Flavours!

Food is Part of a Sustainable Community

The Frontenac Arch Biosphere, and therefore FAB Local Flavours, is a non-government, non-profit organization, supported by the participants and fundraising. Our goal over the long term is to continue to grow the local food sector of the economy, work to educate and grow the consumer market for local food, and to help create a local food identity that gives visitors and residents alike an authentic culinary experience in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere.
