The 95 foot schooner Katie Eccles was built in Deseronto in 1877 and was one of the last schooners to sail on Lake Ontario. She left Oswego and sailed to Napanee with a load of coal in Nov 1922 when she ran into heavy weather. Captain Harry Mitchell, was able to guide her safety to Timber Island. The anchors were put out but could not hold the Eccles and soon afterwards the rudder post was broken. Captain and crew went ashore. The anchor chain eventually broke and she drifted away and sank between Timber Island and Nine Mile Point.
